Spiti Valley in October
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go now — October's the final window before snowfall seals the valley, passes close mid-month, and nights already drop below freezing.
October is Spiti's closing window and it rewards those who catch it. The Kunzum Pass from Manali side typically closes mid-to-late October under the first heavy snowfall. The Kinnaur route remains open but gets increasingly cold and icy at higher sections. Temperatures drop to 0-12°C with nights hitting -5 to -10°C. Kaza is still operational but winding down: some guesthouses close, restaurant hours shorten, and the supply chain slows as trucking becomes less reliable. The golden autumn palette deepens — burnt orange, amber, and bare brown.
The October story
Early October is September's equal with even fewer people. The golden light is warmer and lower, the autumn colours deeper, and you might be the only guest in your homestay. Key Monastery in October light, with the last gold leaves on the willows and fresh snow dusting the peaks above, is arguably the single most beautiful image in Indian mountain travel. Chandratal Lake is still accessible in early October and the camping grounds are nearly empty — you'll have the lake virtually to yourself. Dhankar's fortress silhouette against autumn sky is breathtaking. But the clock is ticking: by mid-October, Kunzum is done. By late October, even Kaza starts shutting services. If you visit early October, you win. If you push late October, you risk getting stuck as the Kinnaur route becomes the only exit and it slows with ice. Have a backup plan. Drive carefully — black ice on shaded curves is real. Carry warm layers rated for -10°C nights. The ATM may run low as supply trucks slow.
