Sasan Gir in May
Gujarat, India
Wait — May is last pre-closure window with brutal heat; January-April better.
May at Sasan Gir: 27-42C, extreme heat but lion sightings peak as waterholes shrink. Forest Dept safaris run 5:30-8:30am only — last comfortable slot before Jun 16 closure. Lodges operate at reduced occupancy; many local guides take pre-monsoon leave.
The May story
May is Sasan's last safari month before the Jun 16 monsoon closure — extreme heat at 27-42C compresses the safari window to pre-9am, but the lion concentration story is at its peak. Every surviving waterhole becomes a near-guaranteed sighting location. Photographers chase this exactly: the dry, parched, dusty Gir is the iconic Gir that international wildlife media documents. The trade-off is brutal — 42C jeep heat, dust storms. Last permits before closure are highly sought-after; book in February-March. Lodges run reduced staffing; some shift to pre-monsoon maintenance closure ahead of the Jun 16-Oct 15 park closure. Aramness maintains operations; mid-market lodges run on skeleton crews.
