Pench National Park in January
Maharashtra, India
Wait January — MH-side Pench cool but less famous; consider Tadoba or MP-Pench for first-time safari.
January at Pench Maharashtra is the lesser-known sibling — 11-28°C, dry Vidarbha plateau, the MH-side Pench in cool post-monsoon condition. Pench straddles the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border; the MP-side (Khawasa/Karmajhiri gates, 80% of safari lodges) is more famous, the inspiration for Kipling's Jungle Book and the Pench River (the Waingunga of the stories). The MH-side has Sillari, Khursapar, and Khubala gates — Sillari is the main MH-side entry, less crowded but with fewer lodges than MP-side. Pench River runs through both sides; tigers cross freely. Reserve hours: morning safari 6.30am-10.30am + afternoon safari 2.30pm-6pm. Tuesday afternoons some zones closed.
The January story
Book Sillari/Khursapar zone safari ₹3,000-5,000/jeep via Maharashtra Eco-Tourism online portal 30-45 days ahead. ₹500-1,500/person entry. Stay at Pench Tree Lodge, Pench Jungle Camp (both MP-side, 30-45 km from Sillari gate), or MH-side fewer options: Pench Jungle Retreat near Sillari, Heritage Pench Retreat near Khursapar. MH-side lodges fewer in number (5-8 vs MP-side 30+). Plan 2-3 nights for 4-6 safaris. Tiger sightings: vegetation still thick post-monsoon, sighting probability moderate 30-50%. Leopards, wild dogs, sambar, chital, gaur, sloth bears all present. The Mowgli-Pench-Kipling thematic is real on both sides. Nagpur 80 km N is the gateway (1.5-2 hr drive via NH-44); Pench-MH gates Sillari/Khursapar/Khubala. Most safari purists prefer MP-side Pench or Tadoba 80 km E. The honest pitch: MH-side Pench is for travellers wanting quieter, less-crowded safari with same wildlife — but lodge selection is limited. First-time visitors should consider MP-side or Tadoba instead.
