Nubra Valley in October
Ladakh, India
Most camps and guesthouses shut down by late October, limiting accommodation options significantly
October is Nubra's farewell month. Golden poplars are at peak colour. Tourist numbers drop to 10-20% of summer. Temperatures: 0-14°C. Nights are cold. Khardung La may see early snowfall, making the crossing uncertain. Turtuk's harvest wraps up. The Bactrian camels grow their winter coat.
The October story
Early October Nubra is the photographer's paradise: golden-leafed poplars against white sand dunes against snow peaks—a colour combination that exists nowhere else on Earth. The valley has maybe 30-50 visitors per day instead of hundreds. The dunes at sunrise are yours alone. Turtuk's lanes, lined with golden-leafed apricot trees, feel like a Central Asian fairy tale. The Diskit Maitreya against blue October sky is the clearest view of the year. But the clock ticks: Khardung La can close with the first heavy snow, trapping those on either side. By late October, most camps and guesthouses close. The smart October visitor books the first two weeks, keeps a flexible schedule, and has a backup plan for pass closure. The reward justifies the risk.
