Nubra Valley in March
Ladakh, India
Khardung La pass remains snowbound, blocking all vehicle access to the valley
March sees very early thaw at Nubra. Khardung La may start clearing by late March in some years but remains officially closed. The valley floor thaws gradually. Temperatures: -12°C to 2°C. The first apricot buds appear in Turtuk. The pass road is being cleared by BRO (Border Roads Organisation) crews.
The March story
March is the month when Nubra's return to accessibility begins but isn't complete. The BRO works heroically to clear Khardung La, blasting snow and pushing debris. If you're monitoring the road status from Leh, late March sometimes offers a brief window—but it's unreliable and the pass can close again after fresh snow. The valley itself, emerging from winter, has a raw beauty: brown desert floor, white mountains, early green along the Shyok River banks. Diskit and Hunder villages prepare for the tourist season. The Bactrian camels, tough survivors of Central Asian lineage, begin their seasonal moulting—they look magnificently shaggy. This is pre-season Nubra, and visiting now means total solitude and considerable risk.
