Yarab Tso — Nubra's hidden sacred lake above Sumur.
Tour itineraries crowd Diskit Maitreya, Hunder dunes and Panamik hot springs — Yarab Tso sits in a small side-valley above Sumur and has no road access, so it stays off most operator brochures.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
A small turquoise lake at ~3700m considered sacred by Nubra Buddhists. Pilgrims do not bathe in it; locals discourage photography from the north shore (the "sky-bowl" reflection). The lake is glacier-fed from Yarab peak and frozen Dec-Mar. Trail starts unmarked from Sumur village — climb through apricot orchards, then a short scree section, total 25min one-way. No commercial activity at the lake (deliberate community decision). Best in late afternoon when the cliffs go gold. Carry your own water; leave no trace.
