Manikaran in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
January Manikaran is cold and steam-wrapped. At 1760m in the Parvati Valley, temperatures drop to 0-10°C, but the famous hot springs keep the air above the geothermal vents warm enough to cook rice—literally. The Gurudwara Sri Manikaran Sahib and the adjacent Hindu temples sit beside the roaring Parvati River, and in winter the contrast of hot steam against cold mountain air creates an ethereal scene.
The January story
The hot springs are the reason Manikaran exists, and in January they feel most miraculous. Water emerges from the earth at 90-95°C—hot enough that the Gurudwara's langar (community kitchen) cooks dal and rice in the spring water. Bathing pools are maintained at bearable temperatures for pilgrims. The Gurudwara offers free accommodation and meals (langar) year-round, making this one of India's most accessible spiritual experiences regardless of budget. The Shiva Temple across the river houses a legendary hot spring where, according to mythology, Shiva's serpent Sheshnag released thermal water to recover Parvati's lost earring (mani = jewel, karan = ear). January means few pilgrims, no queues for the thermal baths, and the Parvati River running crystal-clear.
