The October story
The last comfortable window for visiting Likir before spring. The monastery's main halls remain open, and the reduced monk population means more personal interactions—the lama in charge of the library chatted with me for an hour about the monastery's 960-year history. The Alchi road is in excellent condition. The apricot trees go golden and then bare within two weeks. The drive from Leh in October is spectacular—the Indus glows turquoise, the willows along its banks turn yellow, and the mountains have a dusting of fresh snow on their tops. Bring serious cold-weather gear for evenings. Book any remaining guesthouse in advance—options are down to 1-2 by late October.
