Likir in April
Ladakh, India
Snow blocks roads and monasteries close in April
April brings Likir properly to life. Temperatures reach 5-15°C during the day. Apricot trees in the village burst into pink blossom beneath the golden Buddha—one of Ladakh's most photographed spring scenes. The monastery opens all its halls. The village's farming cycle restarts with barley planting.
The April story
April Likir is a photographer's dream that few photographers know about. The contrast of pink apricot blossoms, golden Buddha, whitewashed monastery, and snow-capped peaks behind is extraordinary. The monastery's main prayer hall, with its centuries-old murals, is open and well-lit by spring sun through high windows. The Likir-Yangthang trek (easy, 4-5 hours) opens up—a walk through villages connected by ancient foot paths. The monastery's butter sculpture collection is among Ladakh's finest. Day trip to Alchi (25 km), home to some of the oldest Buddhist art in the world, is an easy combination. Guesthouses are open and eager; you'll likely be their first guest of the season.
