Good Time
Likir in August
Ladakh, India
August is Likir's most visited month, riding Ladakh's overall peak season. The monastery courtyard sees steady foot traffic between 10 AM and 4 PM. Days are warm (15-28°C). The barley fields surrounding the monastery turn golden as harvest approaches. The Maitreya statue, visible from kilometres away, draws every passing vehicle to stop.
The August story
Despite peak traffic, Likir never feels overcrowded—it's not on the main Leh-Srinagar highway, so only those specifically wanting to come here make the 9 km detour from the main road. The early morning (before 9 AM) and late evening (after 5 PM) are yours alone with the monks. The monastery's collection of historical weapons and ritual objects is displayed in a small room off the main hall—easy to miss, worth finding. The harvest season means you'll see traditional Ladakhi farming in action—hand-cutting barley, threshing on flat rooftops using dzos (yak-cow hybrids). The drive back to Leh at sunset, with the Indus Valley bathed in golden light, is one of Ladakh's great road experiences.
