Likir in May
Ladakh, India
Altitude acclimatization still matters despite comfortable weather and easy access
May is when Likir becomes genuinely comfortable. Days hit 12-22°C, all monastery buildings are open, and the village is green with young barley. The golden Maitreya gleams against deep blue skies. Tour groups start including Likir in their Leh circuits, but numbers remain modest—maybe 30-50 visitors per day at most.
The May story
The monastery's assembly hall holds regular prayer sessions that visitors can attend—sit quietly at the back on low cushions. The head lama sometimes offers brief audiences. The rooftop view of the Indus Valley with snow peaks beyond is at its best in May—clear air, strong light, minimal haze. The Likir-Temisgam walk (6-7 hours) passes through Ladakh's most traditional agricultural landscape. Homestay food improves dramatically as fresh vegetables return—Ladakhi vegetable stew, fresh-baked bread, and apricot jam. The 52 km drive from Leh is now a pleasant 90 minutes through spectacular scenery. May combines accessibility with authenticity better than any other month.
