Karla & Bhaja Caves in June
Maharashtra, India
June flips the Karla-Bhaja calendar. The southwest monsoon arrives in Lonavala typically Jun 7-14 — the western Sahyadri ridge catches the first heavy rainfall on the subcontinent. Within days of monsoon onset, basalt cliffs on both Karla and Bhaja hills begin shedding waterfalls; the entire hillside becomes the visual experience the caves were carved against. Bhaja's south-facing cliff line in particular develops a cluster of cascades that fall directly past the cave 12 music-room. Karla's chaitya hall stays dry inside, but the approach climb is now in rain. Mumbai-Pune Expressway sections see Khandala-Lonavala mist warnings. The Ekvira Devi temple courtyard floods in heavy spells. This is when Karla-Bhaja becomes a Sahyadri monsoon destination, not a heritage day-trip — pack rain gear and accept the chaos.
