Peak Season
Kalpa in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
May warms Kalpa to 10-22°C. The apple blossoms give way to tiny fruit setting on the branches. The forest around the village is dense and green. Kinner Kailash sheds snow from its lower faces. The Kinnaur circuit (Kalpa-Sangla-Chitkul) is fully accessible. Weekend tourists arrive from Shimla. The guesthouses fill. Prayer flags snap in spring wind along every ridge.
The May story
May Kalpa is the accessible version of Kinnaur. All roads open, all guesthouses operational, and temperatures comfortable for full-day exploration. The Kinner Kailash views remain good in mornings. The Kinnaur circuit (Kalpa-Sangla-Chitkul) is at its most practical. Chitkul â the last village, with its wooden temple and terraced fields â is a full-day trip from Kalpa worth every minute. The May wildflowers in the forests between Kalpa and Roghi add colour to walks. For trekkers, the trails toward the Kinner Kailash base become snow-free at lower altitudes. The village guesthouses serve Kinnauri food: siddu, chilte (buckwheat pancake), and fresh apricots. May weekends are busy; weekdays remain calm. Budget: Rs 1200-3000. The Shimla-Kalpa highway (NH5) passes through Rampur, Sarahan (Bhimakali temple â well worth a stop), and Reckong Peo. The 260km drive takes 8-10 hours and is an experience in itself â some of India's most spectacular mountain road engineering.
