Junagadh in May
Gujarat, India
Skip — defer to Nov-Feb. May breaks the heritage-walk experience.
May is Junagadh's hardest month — peak Saurashtra-foothills heat at 26-41C, exposed heritage walks unusable for most of the day, and even Sakkarbaug Zoo struggling to keep animals visible. Pilgrim infrastructure operates with reduced hours.
The May story
There's no version of May at Junagadh that delivers the Mauryan-to-Mughal heritage story properly. The Ashokan Rock Edicts open, Uparkot Fort gates work, Mahabat Maqbara is photographable — but the cool dry windows of November-February don't exist in May. Saurashtra circuit locals defer trips. Heritage travellers arriving in May should restrict to 5:30-9am temple and fort windows and post-7:30pm museum recovery, with AC of Lemon Tree or The Lotus Hotel as midday refuge. Wait — November-February is the city that the rebuild-cultural-layer narrative actually deserves.
