Delhi in May
Delhi, India
May is Delhi's furnace month. Temperatures hit 40-47°C, the loo (hot wind) blows from the Rajasthan desert, and the city operates on emergency protocols. Power demand peaks, tempers fray, and the only sensible tourism is before 7am or after 7pm.
The May story
The honest advice: do not plan Delhi in May unless transiting. But if here, the 5am Humayun's Tomb walk (empty, warm but bearable, golden light on red sandstone) is legitimately beautiful. The air-conditioned museums — National Museum, National Gallery, Crafts Museum, Rail Museum — become the itinerary. Old Delhi's Jama Masjid neighbourhood serves the coldest, most necessary lassi and sharbat in India. Mangoes peak: dasheri, langra, chausa, and Alfonso at INA Market at half the price of neighbourhood fruit shops. The metro system is a destination in itself — clean, cool, and connecting every major site. Rooms: ₹1,000-8,000/night.
