Waterlogging makes sightseeing impossible and disease risk spikes during peak monsoon
July monsoon fills Delhi with 200-250mm of rain. The city floods predictably (certain underpasses, certain colonies), greens unpredictably (every surface sprouts), and operates in a rhythm of rain, relief, rain. Temperatures: 28-36°C. Humidity: brutal.
The July story
Monsoon Delhi is an acquired taste that rewards acquisition. Humayun's Tomb in rain — the red sandstone darkening, the garden channels filling as the Mughal engineers intended, peacocks displaying on the lawns — is worth getting wet for. The Lodhi Garden after rain, with every tomb reflected in puddles, looks like a watercolour painting. Old Delhi's covered bazaars (Chandni Chowk, Kinari Bazaar, Dariba Kalan) are ideal monsoon activities: roofed, atmospheric, and leading to food at every turn. The National School of Drama and Habitat Centre programme monsoon cultural events. Rooms: ₹1,500-10,000/night.
