Delhi in December
Delhi, India
Hazardous air quality peaks in December, often exceeding safe breathing levels for several weeks
Peak crowds
December is one of Delhi's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Monuments packed on weekends and holidays. Red Fort/Qutub Minar lines long in winter. Summer heat thins crowds but is brutal.
December chills Delhi to 4-22°C with lingering pollution that slowly clears through the month. By mid-December, cold weather helps settle the smog, and the city's winter character emerges: foggy mornings, crisp afternoons, and Christmas markets at Select City Walk and other malls.
The December story
December Delhi gradually recovers from November's pollution crisis. The second half is measurably cleaner than the first. Christmas brings a secular celebration to South Delhi — the churches of Connaught Place hold midnight mass, and the restaurants compete with prix-fixe menus. New Year's Eve sees celebrations from India Gate to Hauz Khas. The winter cultural season is in full swing: music, theatre, literary events at India Habitat Centre, NCPA, and galleries. Old Delhi's winter street food — the kebabs of Jama Masjid, the chai of Chandni Chowk — hits peak quality. Republic Day preparations begin at Kartavya Path. Rooms: ₹2,000-15,000/night with New Year premiums.
