Peak Season
Barmer in January
Rajasthan, India
January is Barmer at its coolest: 5-25°C, clear desert skies, and the Thar at its most photogenic. This is the Rajasthan that tourists skip — no Jaisalmer fort, no camel safari Instagram posts, just genuine desert villages, incredible textiles, and silence that hums.
The January story
Barmer is the desert beyond Jaisalmer — the town where the tour buses don't go and the Thar becomes genuinely rural and unperformed. The textile tradition here is extraordinary: Barmer is famous for its ajrak block printing (geometric patterns using natural dyes), mirror-work embroidery, and applique work that has been practised for centuries. January is when workshops are busiest, fulfilling orders, and artisans are happy to demonstrate their craft. Visit the Kiradu temples (35km east) — a cluster of 11th-century temples that rival Khajuraho in sculptural quality but receive almost no visitors. The surrounding desert in January is pleasant for walks, with temperature dropping to 5°C at night under a sky thick with stars. Barmer has basic hotels. The real accommodation is homestays in nearby villages — arranged through local contacts or the district tourism office.
