Peak Season
Bundi in January
Rajasthan, India
January is Bundi at its quiet best — 12-22°C under clear Rajasthani skies. The stepwells that made this town famous are empty of tourists and full of morning light. Taragarh Fort on the hill above is cool enough for the steep climb. The miniature painting tradition that distinguishes Bundi from every other Rajasthan town is visible in the Chitrashala (painting gallery) at Garh Palace, where 18th-century murals glow in winter sun.
The January story
Start at Raniji ki Baori — India's most beautiful stepwell, 46 metres deep, carved with the kind of detail that European cathedrals would envy. Go at 8am when sunlight reaches the bottom. Then climb to Garh Palace for the Chitrashala, where miniature paintings depict everything from Krishna's life to royal hunts in a style unique to Bundi — smaller, more intimate, more colourful than Mughal or Mewar schools. Taragarh Fort above the palace rewards the 30-minute climb with Aravalli views. For stepwell obsessives, hire a local guide (Rs 500-800) to show you the dozen lesser-known baoris hidden in the old city — some are in people's backyards. Evening: watch Nawal Sagar reflect the sunset. Stay at Haveli Braj Bhushanjee for heritage atmosphere or Bundi Vilas for boutique comfort. Budget rooms: Rs 600-1000. The old city bazaar sells miniature paintings directly from artists' homes. Bundi is 36km from Kota, which has the nearest railway junction and hospital.
