Barmer in February
Rajasthan, India
Go in February — Barmer's craft workshops are most accessible in peak season, temperatures are ideal for desert travel, and clear skies favour photography.
Peak crowds
February is one of Barmer's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Desert town, rarely crowded. Barmer festival (Jan) is the only busy period. Summer heat keeps everyone away.
February warms the desert gently. Barmer's famous textile artisans — block printers, embroiderers, applique workers — are at full production for the tourist season. The Kiradu temples, Rajasthan's most underrated ruins, bask in winter-clear light 35km from town.
The February story
February extends January's gentle conditions with slightly longer days. The Kiradu temples deserve a full morning — the main Someshwara temple has sandstone carvings of apsaras, mythological scenes, and architectural details that art historians rank among western India's finest. The site is protected by ASI but has minimal facilities — bring water and sun protection. Back in Barmer town, the old market sells textiles directly from artisan families. The ajrak printing process — involving multiple layers of resist-dyeing with indigo and alizarin — is fascinating to watch and takes 10-14 days per piece. February is also camel-fair season in surrounding Thar villages — smaller than Pushkar but completely authentic. Ask locally about upcoming melas. The Barmer train station connects to Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Delhi, making it an easy addition to a Rajasthan itinerary.
