Baratang Island in January
Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India
Go in January — dry weather makes mangrove boat rides reliable and mud volcano hiking safe, though book guides ahead as accessibility is limited.
Peak crowds
January is one of Baratang Island's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Andaman islands peak Nov–Mar during cool season and school holidays; monsoon and sea swells restrict access Jun–Sep.
Baratang in January is the day-trip working at full reliability. The Andaman Trunk Road convoy from Jirkatang gate departs 5:30am, 8:30am, and 12:30pm with a strict no-stop, no-photography pass through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve. From Port Blair this means a 4am wake-up. The mangrove creek boat ride from Nilambur jetty to the limestone cave entrance runs 90 minutes each way - dinghies are 8-10 person, 1,200 rupees per head, calm water through January. The mud volcano viewing platform 7km from the jetty is dry and stable. There is no mobile network on Baratang. Most travelers do this as a 14-hour single-day return.
