Buddhist monasteries founded before 1500 CE that still operate as living religious communities — not museum sites. Tabo, Lamayuru, Hemis, Tawang, Rumtek and others; each holds wall murals and sacred objects continuously cared for since the founding century.
Pre-clear visit timing with the monastery — most have specific gompa-open hours; some host morning prayer sessions visitors can quietly attend. Photography rules vary; check at the entrance, not on Instagram.
