The Biker's Data Guide

Every major ride scored by month, road quality, and fuel gaps

Rides Scored — Not Romanticized

India has some of the world's best motorcycle routes. It also has some of the most dangerous. Here's every major ride scored on real conditions, not Instagram fantasy.

Manali–Leh Highway (475km)

**Window:** Jun 15 – Sep 30 (road closed rest of year)

**Best month:** July (4/5) — roads cleared, weather stable

**Road quality:** 3/5 — mix of paved and broken. Rohtang to Keylong is good. Pang to Upshi is rough.

**Fuel stops:** Tandi (last before Sarchu), Pang (unreliable), Karu (before Leh). Carry 5L extra.

**Altitude:** Crosses 5 passes above 4,000m. Tanglang La at 5,328m.

**Time:** 2 days minimum. 3 days recommended with acclimatization stop in Keylong or Jispa.

Altitude sickness is the real danger, not the road. Headaches start at Sarchu (4,300m). Diamox helps but consult a doctor. Do NOT ride Manali to Leh in one day — people have died trying.

Spiti Circuit (Manali–Kaza–Shimla, ~700km)

**Window:** Jun – Oct

**Best month:** September (5/5) — stable weather, roads at their best

**Road quality:** 2/5 Manali side (Rohtang-Kunzum), 4/5 Shimla side (well-paved to Nako)

**Fuel stops:** Kaza only reliable fuel between Manali and Reckong Peo. Fill up completely.

**Altitude:** Kunzum La at 4,590m. Kaza at 3,650m.

**Time:** 5-7 days for the full loop.

The Manali-Kaza stretch has no fuel for 200km. Carry extra. The road through Losar and Batal is among the worst in India — loose rocks, river crossings, no tarmac. Go clockwise (Shimla side first) if you want the better road first.

Rajasthan Circuit (Jaipur–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Udaipur, ~1,200km)

**Window:** Oct – Feb

**Best month:** November (5/5) — perfect temperature, clear skies

**Road quality:** 5/5 — national highways, well-maintained

**Fuel stops:** Every 30-50km. No fuel anxiety.

**Altitude:** Sea level to 500m. No altitude issues.

**Time:** 7-10 days with stops.

This is the comfort ride. Smooth roads, petrol pumps everywhere, hotels at every price point. The desert stretch between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer (285km) is the highlight — straight road through the Thar with sand dunes on both sides.

Essential Gear Checklist

- Helmet (full face, not half) — non-negotiable

- Riding jacket with armour and rain liner

- Knee guards at minimum, riding pants ideally

- Tank bag for documents and quick access

- Puncture kit + portable air pump (tubeless tyres)

- Bungee cords / ratchet straps for luggage

Bike Rental Reality

Royal Enfield Himalayan: ₹1,200-1,800/day (the default mountain bike)

Royal Enfield Classic 350: ₹800-1,200/day (heavier, better on highways)

KTM 390 Adventure: ₹2,000-2,500/day (better bike, harder to find)

Always check brake pads, chain tension, and tyre condition before departing. Test ride for 30 minutes locally before committing to a 5-day trip.

The Verdict

Manali-Leh is the bucket list. Spiti is the better ride. Rajasthan is the easy one. Pick based on your skill level and tolerance for bad roads.
