Best Time to Visit Kashmir: Month-by-Month Intelligence

The truth about winter vs spring — and why September beats both

3 min read1 March 2026

Kashmir draws 20 million tourists a year. Most come in June-July. Most are wrong.

September: The Real Peak (Score 5/5)

Post-monsoon clarity. The Dal Lake reflects a sky so blue it looks edited. Mughal Gardens are lush without the summer crowd crush. Gulmarg meadows turn golden-green. Srinagar to Pahalgam drive is stunning. 15-25°C. This is Kashmir as the Mughals saw it.

October: Autumn Magic (Score 5/5 for Srinagar, 4/5 for Gulmarg)

Chinar trees turn red and gold — Kashmir's famous autumn. Srinagar's Boulevard Road becomes a corridor of fire-coloured trees. Photography month. Tourist numbers drop. Prices drop. Quality of experience goes up.

December-February: Snow Kashmir (Score 5/5 for Gulmarg)

Gulmarg becomes India's only real ski destination. Powder snow, gondola running, ski instructors available. Srinagar gets cold (0-8°C) but Dal Lake with snow-capped mountains behind it is iconic. Houseboat stays with a bukhari (heater) are atmospheric.

March-April: Spring Tulips (Score 4-5/5)

Asia's largest tulip garden opens in Srinagar. Almond blossoms line the Boulevard. Meadows thaw. Ski season ends, trekking season begins. The transition is beautiful — cold mornings, warm afternoons.

June-July: The Overcrowded Truth (Score 3-4/5)

Pleasant weather (18-30°C). But: Srinagar's Dal Lake houseboats are overbooked and overpriced. Pahalgam and Gulmarg are elbow-to-elbow. Amarnath Yatra creates massive crowd surges. The experience is diluted by volume. Score is 3-4 because the weather is good — the crowd management isn't.

August: Monsoon Light (Score 3/5)

Kashmir gets less monsoon than the rest of India but still sees light rain. Fewer tourists. Green valleys. Good for budget travelers who don't mind occasional showers.

Kids: 5/5 (Gulmarg), 4/5 (Srinagar)

Kashmir is genuinely excellent for families. Easy terrain, good hospitals (Srinagar has SKIMS), full network coverage, pony rides, shikaras, snow play. The only concern: political sensitivity — check current advisories before booking.
