April is Verinag at its spring best — 10-22°C. The Mughal garden is fully green. The octagonal spring pool, lined with stone arches and surrounded by chinar trees leafing out, is Mughal hydraulic engineering at its most elegant. The Jhelum's birth from this crystal pool is genuinely moving. The surrounding apple orchards bloom. Few tourists know Verinag exists.

Government hotel with spring garden access. Clean rooms, decent restaurant. The Mughal garden springs are a 5-minute walk. Best base for exploring all three spring towns in a day.

Lunch service is the safer bet — kitchens in this part of South Kashmir wind down early and dinner can be slow if you arrive after a tour-bus rush. Ask if trout is on; supply is intermittent.

Order the trout fry over the rogan josh — they get their fish from the Kokernag farm 20km away, which is the freshest trout you'll find on this side of the valley. Skip the buffet on group-tour days; à la carte is faster.

Phone the JKTDC Srinagar office (0194-2502274) the morning of your visit and ask the manager to pre-arrange lunch — the kitchen is cold otherwise and you'll wait 90 minutes for a fire.
