January in Ajmer is crisp and clear — mornings around 7°C, afternoons a comfortable 22°C. The Dargah Sharif hums with devotion but not the crushing pilgrimage crowds of Urs season. Pushkar, 14km away, is equally calm after its November fair hangover.

A 150-year-old haveli converted into a heritage stay. The Rajput family still lives here and hosts guests. Evening chai with the colonel and his stories of Ajmer is the real draw. Rooms are basic but the experience is priceless.

Ask for a window booth on the upper level — the railway-platform view at dusk is part of the restaurant's identity. Sundays before noon get loud with families.
