Khardung La road remains largely snowbound; most April visitors can't reach Turtuk reliably
April at Turtuk is the cruel month for travel photographers. Apricot blossoms peak April 8-16 in the village courtyards — pale pink and white flowers covering the orchards that line every pathway. Daytime at 2,900m climbs to 10-12C, nights drop to -5 to 0C. The village is at its most photogenic. But Khardung La pass remains firmly closed for civilian traffic — BRO clearance reaches the mid-section but the road does not declare open until late May. The Diskit-Turtuk approach is impassable. Homestays not yet operational. The 350-odd Balti residents carry on village life around the blossom — wedding season for many families. The Apricot Blossom Festival in 2026 runs April 8-16 across the lower Nubra (Sumur, Tirit, Hunder, Turtuk), but reaching Turtuk for it requires special army-arranged access through tour operators specifically organising for the festival window — a small handful of expedition operators do this each year on direct contracts with Ladakh Tourism. Mainstream travellers wait for May.
