Somnath in May
Gujarat, India
Skip — defer to Nov-Feb. May breaks the entire Somnath experience.
May is Somnath's hardest month — peak Saurashtra coastal heat at 28-40C with 70%+ humidity, exposed Jyotirlinga seafront unusable for most of the day, and pilgrim infrastructure operating on reduced hours. Even the Bhalka and Triveni circuits, just minutes from town, become heat-management exercises.
The May story
There's no version of May at Somnath that makes the Jyotirlinga story shine. The temple opens, darshan happens, the sound-and-light show runs — but the cool Arabian Sea evenings of November-February don't exist, and even Saurashtra-circuit locals defer non-essential pilgrim trips to November. If you're here in May only because the schedule forced it, restrict yourself to 5:30-9am temple windows and post-7:30pm seafront walks, and treat the AC of Lords Inn or Sagar Darshan as recovery time. Otherwise: wait. The November-February window is exactly what May isn't.
