Siolim in June
Goa, India
Conditional — June 23-25 for São João is genuinely worth the trip (one of India's most photogenic festivals). Other June dates: skip unless you specifically want monsoon-Goa heritage stays cheap.
Monsoon onset. São João Boat Festival (June 24) is the year's photogenic spike.. June at Siolim — monsoon arrives mid-month. Most beach shacks across Goa are closed. But June 24 is São João — the Feast of St. John the Baptist — when a 175-year-old boat float festival converges on the Chapora River. Decorated boats from Chapora, Anjuna, Assagao and Siolim travel to Pereira Vaddo chapel; men in flower-crown kopels jump into wells, ponds and the river to fetch gifts thrown in by villagers, ghumot drums and kansallem cymbals carrying the rhythm. Photographers travel specifically for this.
