Shekhawati in June
Rajasthan, India
June pre-monsoon is Shekhawati's worst — 40-47°C. Dust storms sweep across the flat terrain. The painted surfaces of havelis endure another year of wind erosion. The towns are essentially closed to tourism. Come only if you're studying fresco conservation under extreme conditions. Monsoon arrives late June if at all — Shekhawati is semi-arid and rain is never guaranteed.
The June story
June is Shekhawati at surrender. The towns hunker down. The frescoes endure — they have since the 1820s. The dust storms that sweep through can reduce visibility dramatically and deposit fine sand on everything. The heritage hotels that stay open offer fortress-like refuge. There is no tourism reason to visit. The only June payoff: if you catch the first monsoon rain, the way it hits sun-baked painted plaster and releases 200 years of trapped heat and smell is genuinely remarkable. But you can't plan for that. Wait for October.
