Orchha in January
Madhya Pradesh, India
January Orchha is cool, clear, and hauntingly beautiful. This forgotten Bundela Rajput capital sits at 253m on the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh, and winter temperatures of 8-22°C make it perfect for exploring the 16th-century cenotaphs, palaces, and temples. The 14 chhatris (memorial spires) reflected in the Betwa at sunrise are India's most underrated monument photograph.
The January story
Orchha deserves the attention that Khajuraho gets and doesn't receive. The Jahangir Mahal—built by Bundela king Bir Singh Deo specifically for a single visit by the Mughal emperor—is a palace of extraordinary ambition and beauty, with painted ceilings and stone lattice work that rival anything in Rajasthan. The Raja Mahal next door has the best-preserved Bundela murals in India, covering walls and ceilings with religious and courtly scenes. The Ram Raja Temple, unique in India as the only temple where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king (with a guard of honour and evening gun salute), has daily ceremonies that feel genuinely ancient. January's cool weather means you can walk the entire Orchha circuit—both palaces, the cenotaphs, the Chaturbhuj Temple, and the riverfront—in a comfortable half-day. Rafting on the Betwa operates in winter. The town has maybe 100 visitors on a busy day.
