Mumbai in July
Maharashtra, India
Skip July — Mumbai's heaviest monsoon, flood-heavy, ferries off, plan nothing outdoor-dependent.
July is the heaviest month of Mumbai's monsoon. Average rainfall sits around 800mm — concentrated in heavy bursts — and the city has its own choreography for it: pump-out crews at low-lying junctions, schools closed on red-alert days, taxis tripling their rates after rush hour. The temperature settles into the 25-29°C band; the humidity stays at 90%+. Elephanta ferry remains suspended (and won't restart until ~Sep 15 under MMB rules). Local trains halt entirely on 250mm+ days. Tourism collapses to almost nothing — the city is fully internal-facing, and the only outsiders are committed monsoon-lovers or business travellers who couldn't reschedule.
The July story
July Mumbai is structurally not a tourist month. If you're here for work: stay in South Mumbai (Fort, Colaba, Marine Drive) where storm drains hold, eat indoors at Britannia or Trishna, and budget 90 minutes extra for every trip — Uber surge during rain is brutal. The genuine experience: garam chai and pakoras at Kyani, watching the Arabian Sea throw itself at Worli Seaface, the smell of wet earth at Hanging Gardens. Skip Elephanta plans, skip Alibaug/Kashid day-trips (ferry off and roads rough), skip Lonavala weekends (expressway frequently closed for landslides). Hotel rates are at annual lows — Taj and Trident lounges nearly empty. If you want monsoon as a story rather than an obstacle, you'll get it. Anything else, postpone to October.
