Lonavala in April
Maharashtra, India
Skip — April Lonavala is hot, brown, and waterless; Mahabaleshwar or Matheran sit cooler at higher elevation.
April Lonavala is uncomfortable at 625m — 22-36°C, dust haze rolling in from the Deccan plateau, and the Sahyadri ridges fully sun-bleached. Bhushi Dam's stepped concrete sits dry, Tiger Point's valley loses depth to haze, and Lion's Point's sunset shows brown not green. The expressway weekend traffic from Mumbai-Pune has shifted to Mahabaleshwar (1372m), Matheran (803m), and Bhandardara — Lonavala is the abandoned middle.
The April story
Skip the trip unless you are passing through. If you do stop, do it as a 2-3 hour break on the expressway — chikki at Maganlal on Bazaar Road, a quick misal at Ramkrishna, and back on the road. Karla-Bhaja caves are still cool inside but the walk between them is brutal after 10am. Lohagad and Visapur treks become unsafe for unfit walkers in this heat. Pawna Lake camps are uncomfortable for tent overnights — operators report cancellations through April. Mahabaleshwar 90km south has strawberry season; Matheran 50km east holds 800m cool air. Both are better choices.
