The November story

November Likir is an acquired taste. The monastery's winter routine is ancient and unchanged—morning prayers at dawn regardless of temperature, butter tea as the primary source of warmth, and a slow rhythm dictated by short days and long nights. The Maitreya statue, frost-rimmed at dawn, is achingly beautiful. But you need to want this. There's no backup plan, no alternative activity, no rescue if conditions deteriorate. What you get in exchange is perhaps the truest experience of Ladakhi monastic life available anywhere. The lamas have time to talk. The kitchen has time to cook properly. The prayer hall has time to absorb you into its centuries-old atmosphere.
