Kanatal in July
Uttarakhand, India
July monsoon soaks Kanatal — 300-400mm of rain, clouds sitting in the forest, and trails that become streams. The camping operators are gone. The forest is at its greenest and most alive: ferns, mosses, mushrooms, and orchids flourish. Leeches are everywhere. The few guesthouses that stay open charge bottom prices and serve hot maggi and chai to the rare monsoon visitor.
The July story
July Kanatal is monsoon solitude at its purest. The forest — deodar, oak, and pine — drips continuously and smells of earth, resin, and rain. Mushrooms appear overnight. The cloud sometimes sits inside the forest rather than above it. Walking the Kodia Jungle trail in rain (with proper waterproofs and leech socks) is a sensory immersion: green in every shade, water from every direction, and no other humans. The guesthouses serve hot maggi, chai, and basic dal-rice — comfort food that tastes extraordinary after a wet walk. Budget: Rs 600-1000. Mobile connectivity is unreliable. Power cuts happen. The nearest medical facility is far enough that caution is warranted — don't risk slippery trails in bad visibility. But for the right visitor — the one who finds beauty in rain-soaked forests and doesn't mind wet socks — July Kanatal is a gift.
