The March story
March is transition month — the orchards haven't bloomed but the snow is melting, creating waterfalls and streams everywhere. The Sutlej valley far below turns green while Kalpa's altitude keeps a wintry edge. The Kinner Kailash views are excellent on clear mornings — fresh snow on upper peaks, thawing rock faces below. The village women preparing apple orchards for the coming season is a scene that tourism hasn't altered. The monastery's spring ceremonies invite respectful observation. For the Kinnaur Kailash parikrama (circumambulation trek, 5 days, 3500-5240m), March is too early — that's a July-September undertaking. But the village walks and the Roghi cliff village visit are comfortable. Budget: Rs 600-1200. The road from Shimla is improving through March but landslide scars from previous monsoons can create bottlenecks. Carry warm layers for mornings and lighter ones for afternoon sun — the March temperature swing is dramatic.
