Hanle in May
Ladakh, India
Road access remains uncertain even by late May, leaving you stranded if conditions don't improve
May is when Hanle becomes theoretically reachable, though the approach is still uncertain. The road from Leh via Upshi and Nyoma (250 km, 7-8 hours) may open by mid-to-late May depending on snow clearance. You need an Inner Line Permit from Leh DC office. Temperatures climb to 0-15°C — a dramatic improvement. The sky remains exceptional for stargazing, though the short summer nights mean fewer dark hours. The Hanle Monastery comes alive with resident monks returning from winter quarters. The plateau begins greening at the edges of streams. If you're a serious astronomer, this is when to start monitoring road conditions daily.
The May story
If the road opens in late May, the drive from Leh is itself remarkable: you pass Hemis Monastery, climb over Taglang La area, cross the Changthang plateau with its wild kiangs and marmots, and arrive at Hanle feeling like you have driven to the edge of habitable Earth — because you essentially have. The observatory dome on the ridge is visible 20 km before you reach the village. Stop at Nyoma for the last fuel and supplies. Hanle's 2-3 homestays offer dal-rice-vegetable meals and thick quilts — comfort is basic but genuine. The Hanle Monastery is a 20-minute walk uphill from the village: 350-year-old murals, a resident lama, and views across the Changthang that stretch to the Chinese border. After sunset, step outside and look up. If you have never seen a Bortle 1 sky, the first moment is disorienting — there are too many stars. The Milky Way is not a band; it is a three-dimensional structure you can perceive with naked eyes. This is what the sky looked like before electricity.
