Gangtok in May
Sikkim, India
May is peak tourist season — Gangtok fills with summer holidaymakers escaping the plains. Temperatures at 14-24°C are ideal. MG Marg becomes a promenade. Every monastery, viewpoint, and attraction is fully operational. The downside: traffic congestion on National Highway 10 from Siliguri, booked-out hotels, and the first pre-monsoon cloud that starts hiding Kanchenjunga by afternoon.
The May story
May is everything-available Gangtok: all roads open, all attractions running, all restaurants packed. The challenge is managing crowds and traffic. For the best experience, avoid MG Marg on weekends and visit monasteries early morning. Tashi Viewpoint dawn trips depart at 4:30am — the early start beats both clouds and crowds. The Banjhakri Falls park, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, and the Flower Show complex are pleasant on weekday mornings. Nathula Pass day trips (Rs 3000-5000 for shared taxi, permit required) are operational — standing at the India-China border at 4310m with snow-capped peaks surrounding you is surreal. May Gangtok food scene peaks: try the Tibetan restaurants on MG Road for momos and thukpa, Sikkimese restaurants for gundruk and kinema curry, and the surprisingly good Korean restaurants (cultural link through Buddhism). Book everything 2-3 weeks ahead. Budget: Rs 3000-7000 for good hotels. Pakyong airport flights are most reliable in May.
