The January story
Fatehpur Sikri demands 2-3 hours for the palace complex plus 30 minutes for the Jama Masjid — don't rush it. Start at the Buland Darwaza (built to celebrate Akbar's Gujarat victory) and let the scale hit you before entering the mosque courtyard. The marble tomb of Salim Chishti, whose blessing supposedly gave Akbar his heir, is the finest marble lattice work outside the Taj. Then explore the palace complex: Diwan-i-Am (public audience hall), Diwan-i-Khas (private hall with its impossible single-pillar throne platform), Panch Mahal, and the women's quarters. The pachisi court — a life-sized game board where Akbar used slave girls as living pieces — is history at its most unsettling. January light is warm and directional, perfect for photographing the sandstone carvings. Hire a guide (Rs 500-800) for the history — the architecture alone is beautiful, but the stories make it extraordinary. Carry water even in winter. The nearest facilities are in the village below the ridge. Agra (40km, 1 hour) is the accommodation base.
