The rain eases to showers, clouds start breaking for an hour or two in the mornings, and on a lucky day around September 25-30, Kanchenjunga makes its first ghostly reappearance through the mist. Autumn flush tea picking begins — these aren't as famous as first or second flush, but the copper-coloured leaves produce a uniquely mellow cup. The town starts stirring back to life. Hotel owners begin cleaning up for October season.

Late September is a gambler's month. If you arrive September 20-30 and the monsoon retreats on schedule, you get Darjeeling at its most dramatic: clouds parting to reveal Kanchenjunga after months of hiding, rain-washed gardens at peak green intensity, and almost no other tourists. The toy train resumes reliable service by month-end. Prices are still at monsoon-low levels — you're paying August rates for what might be an October experience. But the gamble is real: some years the monsoon lingers into early October, and your late-September visit is just more rain. Check weather forecasts obsessively for 10 days before booking. If the monsoon is withdrawing from Bihar and Jharkhand, Darjeeling is 3-5 days behind. That's your signal.
