Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in May
Kerala, India
Peak heat and humidity make trekking uncomfortable; wildlife spotting is poorest during dry season
Chinnar in May is the year's harshest rain-shadow month. Daytime 30-38C in the dry deciduous tracks, nights 26-28C. The 7km Thoovanam Falls trek (4-5 hours moderate, ₹500-1,000 group rate) becomes a dawn-only operation under Kerala Forest Department safety restriction — 6am gate, return by 9-10am. Falls flow reduces to non-flow on most days through May; the trek payoff is the trail wildlife rather than the cascade. Wildlife concentration at remaining waterholes peaks — Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura, only Indian habitat, population 280-330), sloth bear, gaur, sambar all visible — but the dawn window collapses to under 4 hours of working time. Marayoor Sandalwood Reserve workable 6-8am only. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms from May 22 onward bring 30-50mm overnight downpours but no day-flow recovery for the falls. Stays at Marayoor at year-low: homestays ₹700-1,400, plantation cottages ₹1,600-3,200; Munnar bracket (60km) ₹1,000-12,000. KSEB power cuts run 3-4 hours daily. Push to November.
