Binsar in December
Uttarakhand, India
December Binsar is cold, clear, and profoundly quiet. Temperatures drop to -2°C at night with daytime highs around 8-10°C. The 300km panorama is winter-sharp. Snow may dust the higher ridges and trails. The forest is bare and beautiful — skeletal oaks framing Himalayan peaks. Barely anyone visits. This is Binsar at its most honest: a wildlife sanctuary in the Kumaon hills doing what it does without an audience.
The December story
December is Binsar for purists. The Himalayan panorama in winter light — low sun angle casting every ridge into relief — is the sharpest and most dramatic of the year. The forest, stripped of deciduous cover, reveals its structure: gnarled oaks, straight pines, and the occasional rhododendron holding dark green leaves against brown neighbours. Wildlife sightings improve with bare forest and concentrated food sources. The cold is real (-2°C nights) and weeds out anyone who isn't committed. Expect to be one of very few visitors. Mary Budden Estate with its fireplaces and colonial atmosphere is the December choice — book the room facing Nanda Devi. Hot water bottles, thermals, and a flask are essential kit. The nearest medical facility in Almora (28km) is reachable but roads can ice over on December mornings. The reward for enduring the cold: a world-class Himalayan panorama shared with no one.
