Bikaner in August
Rajasthan, India
Monsoon humidity makes the heat feel more oppressive than the dry season's 38°C peaks
August is Bikaner's wettest month, though that's relative — perhaps 80-100mm total. Temperatures ease to 33-38°C. The desert around the city turns surprisingly green. Gajner Palace (32km) sits prettily against its lake, now full. This is the most tolerable summer month, though still too hot for comfortable all-day sightseeing.
The August story
August is Bikaner's monsoon peak — still warm but the most tolerable of the summer months. The countryside around the city is unrecognizably green. Gajner Lake fills and becomes a birdwatching spot. Teej festival (usually August) is celebrated with particular fervour in Rajasthan — women in bright clothes, swings, and folk songs animate the old city. The Independence Day (Aug 15) celebrations at Junagarh Fort are a local affair worth witnessing. Hotel prices remain at annual lows. The food improves — seasonal dishes like ker sangri (desert beans) appear on restaurant menus. Still too hot for marathon sightseeing sessions, but 2-3 hour morning and evening windows work. The Bikaner-Jaisalmer road is scenic after rains. Carry electrolytes and mosquito repellent — both are non-negotiable.
