Barren Island in May is the volcano-cruise season ending. Live-aboard operators - Lacadives, Barefoot Dive, Dive India - all close their Barren schedules by May 5-10. Pre-monsoon squalls move into the Andaman Sea, the 135km open-water crossing becomes a 12-hour rolling slog instead of an 8-hour motor, and the dive sites at Volcano Wall and Manta Point lose visibility as upwelling kicks in. Forest Department permits for tourism use through the volcano exclusion zone are not issued from May 15 to October 30. There are no charter alternatives - the cruise model is the only legal way to view the cone. Reschedule to November-March.
