Barmer in June
Rajasthan, India
June is Barmer's hottest month, regularly touching 48°C. Dust storms roll across the Thar, turning the sky orange-brown. The desert waits for monsoon that may or may not arrive — Barmer gets barely 280mm of rain annually. Life continues at the margins.
The June story
June Barmer is the desert at its most extreme and, paradoxically, its most dramatic. Dust storms (andhi) sweep across the Thar with terrifying speed — the sky turns sepia, visibility drops to metres, and sand gets into everything. These storms are followed by eerie calm and spectacular sunsets. The entire district lives on the knife-edge of monsoon anticipation — will the rains come? Will they be enough? Barmer's annual rainfall of 280mm is barely sufficient for agriculture, and a failed monsoon means genuine hardship. If the monsoon arrives early (late June some years), the transformation is instantaneous: parched land erupts green within days, and the desert communities celebrate. June is not tourism. It's witnessing human persistence in one of Earth's harshest inhabited environments.
