Sadhana Forest.
Most day-trippers stop at Matrimandir viewpoint and Visitors Centre and never travel the extra 15 minutes north to the Forest road; Sadhana sits well outside the standard Auroville circuit and runs on volunteer rhythm rather than tourist hours.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
A volunteer-run reforestation project on 70 acres of formerly arid land off the Auroville plateau, started in 2003 by Aviram and Yorit Rozin. Roughly 35,000 trees of 70 indigenous species replanted, water catchment via earthworks. Every Friday: a free guided tour through the work areas, an environmental documentary screening, and a vegan organic dinner cooked over a smokeless wood stove — open to non-Aurovilians without booking. Best: Friday afternoons for the 4 PM community tour-screening-dinner cycle (free); October-March overall. Reach: 5km from Auroville Visitors Centre toward Eddyanchavadi/Tindivanam; rough red-dirt approach last 1km, scooter or auto only — no cabs. Tip: Strictly no plastic, no leather, no perfume on premises. Friday programme starts 4 PM and ends ~9 PM after dinner — bring a torch for the walk back. Long-term volunteers share dorms; day visitors don't stay overnight..
