The stay decisions worth flagging in Puducherry (Pondicherry).
Pondicherry's stay scene is tiny but distinctive — the French Quarter (White Town) is ~8 blocks of yellow colonial buildings, almost all converted to heritage guest houses. Three operators matter: CGH Earth (Palais de Mahe, Maison Perumal), independents like Le Dupleix and Villa Shanti, and Sri Aurobindo Ashram guest houses (no online booking, for ashram visitors only). Book the French Quarter — the other side of the canal is regular Indian small town.
Palais de Mahe (CGH Earth) is ₹8k more per night than Le Dupleix — what you get: a restored Franco-Tamil colonial building on Rue de Bussy with environmental credentials and 4.7 Tripadvisor rating. Le Dupleix gives you similar French-Quarter atmosphere and a garden café at ₹3,500-6,000. The delta buys you the CGH Earth service polish, not a better neighborhood.
Palais de Mahe (CGH Earth)
Restored colonial building on Rue de Bussy in the heart of the French Quarter. CGH Earth's signature low-impact stay model — no TVs in common areas, locally sourced food at La Table (rooftop). 4.7 Tripadvisor rating, consistent top-three Pondy ranking since 2017.
Le Dupleix
French colonial-era property in White Town. Atmospheric rooms around a garden café at ₹3,500-6,000/night — half the price of Palais de Mahe for a similar French Quarter address. 14 rooms, small scale means personal service.
Maison Perumal (CGH Earth)
Restored 150-year-old Chettinad home in the Tamil Quarter (not French Quarter). If you want the non-touristy side of Pondy — Tamil temple streets, old Chettiar merchant houses, quieter lanes — this is your base. 10 rooms around a sun-lit courtyard.
Villa Shanti
French architect-owned 15-room property on Rue Suffren. The design detail — restored cement-tile floors, indoor-outdoor bathrooms, vintage French furniture — is what sets it apart from larger heritage chains. Small enough that you learn the staff's names by day two.
