Peak crowds
January is one of Assagao's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Quieter than Anjuna/Vagator on the coast 3km west. Restaurants packed Fri-Sun evenings Nov-Feb. Saturday Night Market at neighbouring Arpora (3km) is the weekly pulse.
Assagao in January is when the restored-Portuguese-villa village runs at its most coherent. Daytime 20-30C, nights drop to 18-20C — 1-2C cooler than the coastal belt 3km west. Gunpowder (the Andhra-coastal kitchen on St Cajetan Road, since 2010) wants 3-5 day booking lead for dinner; same goes for Bomras (Burmese-modern, since 2007), Sublime, and Mojigao. Vinayak Family Restaurant (the Goan fish thali institution near Anjuna-Assagao crossroads) takes no bookings — arrive by 12:30pm or 7:30pm before the 2-hour wait kicks in. Avo's Kitchen and Ciao Bella round out the choice. Nilaya Hermitage (₹25-45k, the boutique anchor since 1998) holds peak rates from the third week of December through January 5, then eases. Assagao Brewing Company Rooms (₹5-9k), Pousada Tauma (₹3.5-7k) and Naka Cove Tree House (₹8-14k) are the under-₹15k slots. NomadGao coliving runs its full January cohort. Anjuna beach is a 3km scooter ride; the village stays calm and tree-shaded.
