Caution
Almora in August
Uttarakhand, India
August doubles down on monsoon. Landslides occasionally block the Haldwani road. Leeches patrol every forest trail. The mountains vanish behind grey curtain. And yet — the empty guesthouses, the waterfall-streaked valleys, and the moody light create something unforgettable.
The August story
August is Almora's most challenging month and, paradoxically, one of its most honest. The town lives its actual life — farmers tend terraced fields, school children in uniforms navigate muddy paths, and the bazaar sells monsoon necessities, not souvenirs. If you can handle uncertain roads (check conditions with your hotel daily), leeches on forest walks (salt and long socks are your friends), and days without any mountain view, August rewards you with authenticity that no peak-season visit offers. The waterfalls along the Almora-Binsar road are spectacular. The Kumaoni home-cooked meals in small guesthouses — dishes like aloo ke gutke, bhang ki chutney, and ras — taste better when you're sheltering from rain. Independence Day celebrations in small-town India are also genuinely touching.
