Kayaking in Meghalaya: Crystal Rivers and Living Root Bridges

# Kayaking in Meghalaya
Meghalaya's rivers are unlike anything else in India. The Umngot at Dawki is so clear you can see the riverbed 15 metres below. It looks Photoshopped. It is not.
Dawki / Umngot River
**What:** Glass-bottom boat rides and kayaking on India's clearest river. The India-Bangladesh border is visible from the river.
**Season:** November-April when water is clearest. Post-monsoon (October-November) has the best combination of clarity and water level. Monsoon (June-September) turns the river brown and dangerous.
**Cost:** Boat ride Rs 500-800 per boat (shared by 2-3 people). Kayak rental Rs 300-500 per hour. Full-day guided kayaking Rs 1,500-2,500.
**The honest take:** The Instagram photos of boats "floating in air" are real — but only in winter when water levels are low and clarity is maximum. In March-April the effect diminishes. The experience is still beautiful but manage your expectations against the viral photos.
Umiam Lake (Barapani)
25km from Shillong. Kayaking, rowing, and water sports on a massive reservoir surrounded by pine-covered hills. Rs 200-500 per activity. Less dramatic than Dawki but more accessible and better for beginners.
Kynshi River
For experienced kayakers. Grade 2-3 rapids through canyon scenery. Multi-day trips available with local operators. This is adventure kayaking, not tourist kayaking — proper equipment and swimming ability required.
Combining with Sightseeing
Dawki pairs perfectly with:
- **Living Root Bridges at Nongriat** (2-day trek, 3,500 steps down and back up)
- **Mawlynnong** ("Asia's cleanest village," 90km from Dawki)
- **Cherrapunji/Sohra** (waterfalls, caves, 90km from Dawki)
The Dawki → Cherrapunji → Shillong loop is a 3-day circuit that covers Meghalaya's highlights.
Practical Intelligence
- **Access:** Fly to Guwahati, drive 3 hours to Shillong, then 3 hours to Dawki
- **Permits:** Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for some areas near the Bangladesh border. Check current requirements
- **Stay:** Basic guesthouses at Dawki. Better hotels in Shillong
- **Food:** Limited options at Dawki. Eat in Shillong before departing
- **Connectivity:** Weak to none at Dawki. Download offline maps
